Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), in the Western Cape, marched to the offices of the Building Industry Bargaining Council (BIBC), in Bellville, on Wednesday 28 August and handed over a memorandum with their demands. "We unfortunately received very short notice of this march and as there were conflicting reports whether the march was related to the Civil strike we were unable to inform the industry timeously," said Arnold Williams, Secretary for the Building Industry Bargaining Council (Cape of Good Hope).
The BIBC are currently in the process of reviewing the memorandum received from the NUM delegation last week. ""Once we've had sufficient time to study the demands contained within the memorandum, we'll be in a better position to respond,"" added Williams.
The BIBC has confirmed that this dispute is being conciliated in accordance with the constitution of the Council and is aware that the parties, including NUM, are awaiting the outcome of the process.
